Is Cloud ERP’s Next Big Thing?

In Steve Ranger’s recent blog post, ERP: Long, difficult, expensive. Is cloud ERP’s next big thing? Or just a case of slicing costs differently?he draws attention to one of the biggest misconceptions in our industry — that the Cloud is the silver bullet for all of ERP’s* challenges. He accurately explains that, “There is a reason why ERP has taken so long to implement, of course — it’s complicated stuff that involves re-engineering the most important functions of a business.”

It’s important to understand that Cloud computing as a delivery model and subscription software as a consumption model doesn’t change this fact. Many organizations have complex business processes and configuring software to successfully fulfill business requirements takes time and focus. Cloud can bring value by minimizing the ERP project components associated with delivery of software and increased focus can be placed on the business functions the software needs to perform. Cloud isn’t a cure-all, but it can be an important tool in a concerted effort.

*ERP is an acronym commonly used to refer to a class of business software known as Enterprise Resource Planning. Software in this class is typically aimed at providing financial, human resource, procurement, manufacturing and distribution business functions.
