The last couple of weeks have been a whirlwind of high profile events, acquisitions, press releases and frenzied planning as many in the software industry hold user conferences and prepare for a new fiscal year. However, for me the final week of May 2012, will be the first time that I looked in the review mirror and saw on-premise software standing on the corner looking down as the bus pulled away from the curb. I have never doubted Software as a Service (SaaS) as the move forward service, or consumption, model for all types of software, but the perpetual/on-premise model preceding it has continuously displayed the tenacity of the cyborg in the original Terminator in terms of its ability to hang on and remain omnipresent.
It is difficult to pinpoint the fatal blow, or even know for sure that there was one fatal blow. After all, there were two sequals, but it there is an unmistakable feeling that SaaS has hit critical mass. Major players have gone ‘all in’. Game on.
